Panthers’ Track and Field debut at SMHS

On a cold, windy, frustrating day, our Pioneer Valley Track and Field team put up a good race at the city meet at SMHS. They competed against Righetti, Orcutt Academy, Santa Maria High School, and Saint Joseph. Here is what our runners and head coach had to say about their first meet.

“It feels good having my first race for this season. I got 2nd place for my first High School meet so I feel good about it going to the future.” -Taylor Burns (12)
“The first race was okay. I haven’t ran all my events yet. But for my first event was the 400, it was adequate. It wasn’t good, It wasn’t bad. I ran a okay time. They want me to try to break the 400m record. So, that is one of my goals. And also I want to go sub 50 for the 400m.” -Letarian Brandon

“It’s pretty nerve wracking for it to be our first race today. Especially, I feel like I’m not in the best shape that I should be in. So, I think it’s just the process. And my goal for this season is to PR in my 400m and to break the school record and break the school record for the 800m.” -Breanna Arias

“My goal for this season is to go 7.11 seconds on the 100m. It feels good to get a race under my belt so I can see where I am at. I can prepare the progress from here from here on out.” -Julian Mares

“My first meet as a head coach has been stressful. It’s been stressful and has been fun. There is nothing better than watching the student athletes run. There has been a lot of improvements. To me, this is more about getting our marks down, getting our times, and a lot of people made it over the bar. They made it and didn’t get scratched on the long jump, high jump, and triple jump. I think everyone is doing really well. My goal for this season as a head coach, is to just maintain the numbers on our roster. Hopefully we don’t lose to anyone due to grades. Hopefully we improve. It’s about improvement. It’s all about PR (Personal Record). It’s all about improving not so much to compare to the other schools, and if we can compete with the other schools then great. But it’s all about improvement. So as long as we set a PR every meet or every other meet, then I’m happy about that.” -Coach Youngblood
