Wrestling Send Off
Recently our Lady Panthers battled the best wrestlers in the CIF Southern Section. Sophomore Mya Velasquez led the way towards earning her 2nd State Meet bid. Congratulations Mya, 2nd place CIFSS Championships and good luck this weekend at State!
Mya Velasquez is a sophomore and already she is tearing up the wrestling mat! This is her 2nd year going to state. She has been wrestling for about 8 years and absolutely loves it! I asked her what made her want to wrestle and she said “my brother and my parents. They have always been my biggest support system and when I first tried the sport, instantly I fell in love and so did they. They always push me to succeed at anything I do.” She claims the key to being a good wrestler is “hard work, motivation, and the urge to never give up. It all matters on how hard you’re willing to work for it.” She admits the varsity level girls weren’t always very welcoming when she first started. It took a lot of blood, sweat and tears to get to where she’s at right now. The strategy she uses to beat her opponent is to listen to her coach because he always gives the right advice in situations that are really intense. She says “my favorite move is the cradle because it not only forces the person to the point where they can’t move, but I also win using the move.” Her record for this season is 32 wins and 8 losses. She plans to wrestle after high school because it something she really likes to do. Mya can’t believe how fast the season has gone by this year. She’s is sad that she is the only girl from the wrestling team to be going to state, she wishes she had some of her girls there with her; supporting her. Mya says her favorite coach is Mr. Ilac (teacher at PVHS) because he has taught her the ability to be a great wrestler and taught her discipline and faith. This weekend she will be traveling to Valencia to compete against hundreds of girls where she can hopefully bring home the title of the “State Champ.”
Boys Wrestling competed this past weekend at the CIF regional where PV crowned its CIF Champion Elias Zepeda, Elias is our 3rd Champion to come out of PV. Elias Zepeda and Salvador Lara qualified for Masters which will take place in Temecula this weekend. Good luck to Elias and Salvador this weekend!
