PV Students & Staff Outraged Over Nassar

Larry Nassar, a former USA Gymnastics doctor, was accused of molesting 140 women. Kyle Stephens was the first victim to come out with the assault she experienced from Larry Nassar. She stated that the first sexual assault happened when she was only six years old. After Stephens spoke about the assault, many more victims came out with their own encounters of sexual abuse. The numerous victims also include famous gymnasts Simone Biles and Maggie Nichols. Simone Biles came out on twitter saying #MeToo. Larry Nassar is now facing 175 years in federal prison.

“I think that Larry Nassar did a really bad thing that he shouldn’t have done. He wasn’t thinking straight, he wasn’t thinking at all. I think it’s better for everyone that someone finally came out and said something, and that he was put into jail. I’m sure it makes a lot of people feel a lot safer knowing that he’s going to prison and that he won’t be able to do the awful things he’s done before.” -Alma (12)
“I think Larry Nassar is a horrible, shameful individual in terms of the abuse of his power and a legacy of brutality and abuse. I think this has extremely traumatic effects on the victims in this case. There was an interview that one of the girls had, she mentioned that the abuse started when she was about 10 years old and lasted for a number of years. One of the consequences from this was that she kept telling her dad about it, and her dad didn’t believe her. Consequently, her dad committed suicide. It’s just horribly traumatic and sad. Looking at it from my own perspective as a dad, it’s crazy. You can’t live in fear, but you have to pay attention, you have to be cautious, and you have to be aware. In terms of psychology, it’s a personal responsibility, and if you’re a parent, it’s being cautious and aware. If you’re an older sister or brother, again, you need to be aware, and hold people accountable.” -Mr. DePaulo (psychology teacher)
“My thoughts on Larry Nassar are that he’s mentally ill and he should receive help in prison. I also think it’s crazy how much evil is in this world, and how there’s so many guys like him that are still doing stuff like that and not getting caught. I think that the victims really must be scarred for life because of what happened to them.” -Teresita Porch (11)
“I think that molesting women is not right. It’s not a thing that people should be doing, especially someone famous like Larry Nassar because it really ruined his reputation. I think this traumatizes people, especially the women. It must depreciate them, and they probably don’t feel the same after what they’ve gone through.” -Miguel Santos (11)
