Not Just a Game

Not+Just+a+Game

Often video games are seen as some mindless activity that is just meant to entertain people, usually children, for a certain amount of time. People don’t see any other aspects when it comes to games, and they’re often frowned upon by a lot of people because they believe games have no meaning and are meant to waste time and although there are many games like that they can also be so much more.

One aspect of games that is often overlooked is the visuals. Video Games are, in fact, a form of art. It takes a lot of work when designing characters, towns, skies, etc. in games and quality of the animation. The art style of a game can just be visually appealing or unique in order to give it more character. Art styles can also help set the tone of games. These sorts of things matter when wanting to set a mood and impact the player. This art takes a lot of work and can be as visually appealing as an animated movie or a cartoon.

T.V shows, books, and movies are not the only things that can have an amazing story line. There are many video games that give heartfelt and interesting stories that can appeal to so many different people. Video Games can connect the player with the characters mainly because the person is personally playing through the game and in some games, choosing their own path. It’s a lot different when you watch something vs when you’re playing through it. You can get easily attached to video game characters as well which only furthers the impact it can have on you. There are so many stories in games that stick with the player, it’s not always just a simple plot with a basic goal. Video games are often overlooked, and people’s perspective on games should change.

“My favorite aspect of the game (The Evil Within 2) are the visuals and graphics. For example, the pieces of art in chapter 8 where it introduces a character we’re so amazing. It’s different than other video games because of its iconic quotes and unique antagonists.” – Faye Quintero (9)
“I really loved the Bioshock series but one was probably my favorite. It was a beautiful game with weird and kind of scary characters. I like the small details they put into the background characters cuz you really hear and see how insane they’re going by just listening to them. And the ending was pretty meta and made me feel weird and I love it when a game can do that.” – Isaias Maldonado (10)
“Bloodborne is my favorite game for all categories, it’s gloomy gothic atmosphere accompanied by its beautiful haunting soundtrack make it so aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Additionally, it’s story is the best I’ve experienced in years, slowly unraveling the world falling apart as you played. And my final reason is extremely difficult and requires you to learn from your mistakes.” – Carlos Contrearas (11)
“Super Smash Bros ultimate. The graphics are clean and maintains its own style as a fighting game. When it comes to story, The World of Light Campaign would be one of the most clever and fun id have with a video game for a while.. The game’s tag line, Everyone is Here, would have never existed if the creator didn’t get the rights to the 3rd party characters, and since they pushed really hard on it, it shows that the creators really did care about their game. Overall, I like it because of the small details, cleverness, and hard work that they put into it. Working with the source material and expanding on it while staying in the same road. Leading me to think it’s one of the best video games of 2018.” – Miguel Casas (10)
“In this game (Telltale’s The Walking Dead) it let’s you make your own decisions which I think is really cool because it’s like I’m choosing my own path. It’s not the same outcome for everyone because your choices affect the story. The story itself is so good too. I didn’t think i was gonna become attached but by the end of the game I was crying. It’s one of my all time favorite games.”- Eden Pena (12)
