Sewing machines have been spinning for a good cause at PVHS this holiday season. Panthers made and donated more than 80 pillows and cozy blankets to the Good Samaritan Homeless Shelter recently. The work was completed by students from the clothing & fashion classes and the FCCLA (Family Career & Community Leaders of America) Club.

The community outreach was designed to “create a spirit of charity and giving around the holidays” and to “use the skills the students learned in class to make a difference in the community,’’ according to teacher Melissa Diaz.

“I was touched to see the outpouring of compassion and love coming from my teenage students,’’ Diaz said. “Some even asked about volunteer opportunities at the shelter in the future!”

Students say this type of giving is what the holidays are all about.

“This project was fun to make,’’ said student Allan Holguin, 11th grade. “Being able to give comfortable pillows to people in need really gives me a feeling of happiness. So many of us put our love and hard work into the pillows and blankets. I hope someone else can enjoy what we made.’’
