Culinary Students Prepare for ServSafe Exam at Olive Garden
On December 10th the Olive Garden provided a back of house tour for Culinary Arts 2 students in preparation for their upcoming ServSafe managers exam. The first group of 13 students broke off into groups and each manager walked them through the establishment and showed them a variety of ServSafe standards currently used in their kitchen. The second group of 18 students will get the same experience on December 17th.
In the capstone course students work towards earning a ServSafe Managers certificate, which upon passing the exam is valid for 5 years. This field trip gave students a glimpse into the career of a hospitality manager. Students walked in the manager’s footsteps; accepting produce from their vendor, checking temperatures of a variety of food items to ensure safety of food and checking chemical levels in sanitizing solutions are just a few of the different opportunities given to the students.
“Going to the Olive Garden gave me a behind the scenes experience of food preparation. It opened my eyes to how much work and time goes into a business. Students like me getting to be in the kitchen with professionals was an amazing way to spend the day. I enjoyed this experience and it personally gave me insight on how I want to spend my future of wanting to be a chef!”- Noah Guzman 12th grade
“I felt like our culinary trip to the Olive Garden was an overall amazing opportunity! We are currently working on our ServSafe training, so I feel letting us be able to actually see how a kitchen properly runs and how they follow ServSafe guidelines was a great learning experience for each and every one of us. I also thank all the managers for allowing us and showing us around their company, we loved it!” Kailey Anaya 11th grade.
